Open Question: how do I approach girls in my high school without be akward?

Ok...im so confused... like most girls that I met had made the initiatives to talk to me and iono how they do it without it being akward and most of the time I've realize they always notice the way I smell as in the cologne im wearing(curve)...but here's my dilemma I want to be able to get a girl I don't knows attention but im not sure how too since always been being approach by them... and it seem so wierd if I were just to walk up to a girl that doesn't know me and say hi..wouldn't that be akward?
